Abstract

The conflicts surrounding the São Cristóvão’s, a province of Sergipe, religious patrimony in the 19th century is what this paper focus on. In the 19th century, the press became a privileged space for defending elements considered by the scholars as the foundational elements of ‘nationality and of the lifting of a Christian civilization. One of these elements regarded he conservation of temples, at the time understood as both religious patrimony and a testimony of old times. Thus, by studying the records published on the press of the province of Sergipe, we aim to understand the spread of a romantic understanding about the colonial architecture in the city of São Cristóvão, the provincial capital until 1855, and the proposals for preservation.
