Abstract

The Garden of the Memory of Slavery was established in 2007 as a community space symbolising the harrowing period of slavery on Africa’s East Coast and, in particular, the victims of the slave trade that ravaged Mozambique for centuries. Its existence within the city’s heritage context seeks to preserve the history and memory of the people, keeping African and Mozambican traditions alive, as various cultural events take place here. Thus, the aim was to understand the various ways in which the space is used by the island’s community and by visitors, as well as to understand their diverse forms of interpretation and appropriation of the space, considering the importance of safeguarding the heritage identity of the Island of Mozambique, giving a voice to the inhabitants of this place. Based on the literature review and documentary study, it was concluded that the appropriate methodological approach should be qualitative in nature, utilising semi-structured interviews and participant observation. The study concluded that there is some understanding of the monument’s significance and the reasons behind its construction, with particular emphasis placed on the recognition of the importance of its preservation; this partly highlights the need to intensify heritage education initiatives, with a view to fostering a sense of ownership and belonging.

Author Biographies

Claudio Diamantino Zunguene, Universidade Lurio- Faculdade de Ciencias Sociais e Humanas, Ilha de Mocambique

He is a doctoral candidate in Educational Innovation at the Catholic University of Mozambique (UCM). He holds a degree in History Teaching from the Pedagogical University of Mozambique (2004-2008); a master's degree in Cultural Heritage Preservation from the Lúcio Costa Center - Heritage School of the National Institute of Historical and Artistic Heritage (IPHAN), Rio de Janeiro, 2019. He is a researcher at the Conservation Office of Mozambique Island (GACIM) and a lecturer at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities - UniLúrio - Mozambique Island. He is a researcher in the international project "Territories Caring for Life", coordinated by the University of Antioquia - Colombia and the Collective for Education for Peace.

Evangelina Bonifacio, CITeD - Instituto Politécnico de Bragança

Evangelina Bonifácio is a visiting adjunct professor at the School of Education of the Polytechnic Institute of Bragança, Portugal, since 2009. She holds a post-doctoral degree in Educational Sciences from the Catholic University of Portugal - Porto (2019) and in Ethics and Education from the University of Salamanca (2016), a doctorate in Theory and History of Education from the University of Salamanca (2009), and a master's degree in Educational Sciences - Area of ​​Administration and Planning of Education from the Portucalense University (2000). Researcher at CITeD - Transdisciplinary Research Centre in Education and Development, Polytechnic Institute of Bragança, and the research group "Memory and Project of Education" at the Faculty of Education, University of Salamanca. She is part of research project teams in the field of Educational Sciences and has published and participated in national and international conferences as author/co-author. She has supervised several master's dissertations and doctoral theses at various national and international institutions. She has participated in more than 25 doctoral thesis examination boards as the main examiner. She was a visiting professor at the University of Tiradentes (UNIT) in the 2024-2025 academic year and a member of the Scientific and Organizing Committee of the 1st International Summer School, Teacher Training and the Future of Education: Reimagining the 21st Century, at the Center for Postgraduate Studies, Research and Extension in Education, Aracaju, Brazil (November 25-29, 2024). She collaborates with various higher education institutions nationally and internationally, notably UNIPIAGET - Mozambique, the Catholic University of Mozambique, and the Federal University of Grande Dourados (Brazil). Currently, she is a researcher on the international project "Territories Caring for Life," led by the University of Antioquia - Colombia and the Collective for Education for Peace.
