Cultural heritage and tourist market
The Historic Quarter of Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay

This paper examines the relationship between cultural heritage and tourist market, having as object of investigation the Historic Quarter of the city of Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay. The Historic Quarter, listed by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), in 1995, as a World Heritage Site is constituted as a tourist attraction of international significance. This attractiveness was constructed through practices of heritage (appreciation, restoration and registration as a cultural site worthy of preservation) associated with a tourist projection focused on the management and promotion of commercial activities based in heritage. It uses the image, shapes and memory of the buildings that are part of the Historic Quarter as a strategy for driving tourist and business practices oriented by plans managed jointly by public and private organizations. Characterizing and analyzing the process of interface between cultural heritage and tourist market is the main focus of this work.
