Of the misuses of literature by history

Abstract

This article aims to study the always problematic relationship between literature and history. From some aspects of Hayden White’s last book, The Practical Past, we intend to question the fact thatsome historians, when they use literary material, ends up privileging a very specific genre, namely, the realist novel. In its end, this article also intends to demonstrate, through the woks of Antonio Candido and Franco Moretti, how the tools developed by the literary analysis can bring out historical meaning of non-realist novels.

Leandro Thomaz de Almeida, Paulista State University UNESP

Graduação em Teologia (2001), Graduação em Letras pela Unicamp (2005), Mestrado em Teoria e História Literária pela Unicamp (2008) e Doutorado em Teoria e História Literária pela Unicamp (2013). Período de um ano de Doutorado-sanduíche realizado na Université Sorbonne-nouvelle Paris III, sob supervisão do prof. Dr. Alain Pagès, durante o qual realizei pesquisas no ITEM (Institut de textes et manuscrits modernes), Bibliotèque Nationale de France e Bibliothèque Sainte-Geneviève. Em 2015, realizei um período de pesquisas de pós-doutorado na University of California, Davis, sob supervisão do Prof. Dr. Leopoldo Bernucci. Tenho experiência na área de Letras, Literatura, subárea Historiografia e Teoria Literária, Literatura Brasileira, Literatura comparada e Cultura e Teologia.
