Creating ties and reinventing families:
adaptations and indigenous strategies in the captaincy of Maranhão in the 18th Century

The article intends to contribute to the debates on Indigenous History based on the analysis of sources alluding to the Captaincy of Maranhão in the eighteenth century. Armed with the minutes of meetings of the Tribunal of the Junta das Missões, laws, correspondence, missionary reports and wills, it was possible to reconstruct part of the daily life of the captaincy of Maranhão and to unseat the participation of the indigenous people based only on specific moments of historiography in Maranhão. Based on the possibilities that the sources analyzed offer, we point out facts that are still little debated, such as the strategies of freedom of indigenous women in colonial society, as well as the defense of family ties by the villagers or captives through the negotiations that have repeatedly limited the field of action of other colonial agents.
