an analysis about the visions of patrimony in Mário de Andrade e Gustavo Barroso

The decades of 1920-1930 in Brazil were marked by the beginning of politics that aimed to preserve the patrimony. There were two perspectives that differed about that idea. In one of them, it was understood that the patrimony was focused on the popular manifestations. Mário de Andrade supported this line of thought. In the second perspective, the patrimony was view as the legacy of the great deeds and national heroes. It was in this context that Gustavo Barroso idealized the first class of Museology in Brazil. In 1932 the class was open by Rodolfo Garcia in the National History Museum. The aim of this paper is to present the different views of how to treat the patrimony in a way to debate the influences of those visions in the formation of the first museums professionals.
