The article analyzed what the paulista Francisco Adolfo de Varnhagen understood as the necessary gifts to the historian. As the nationality in Brazilian history must be understood, the future Visconde de Porto Seguro pointed out that the historian had to be both a scholar, a philosopher, a literary man, and even a poet. Essentially, the author’s prescriptions inform about a model of writing history in the eighteenth century.
