A Possible Catholicism
the Congregation of the Oratory of Goa and its insertion in Dutch Ceylon

Established in 1682, the Congregation of the Oratory of the Holy Cross of the Miracles of Goa was an "order" formed exclusively by Goan Brahmins and became important missionaries not only in the regions near Goa, but mainly in Ceylon, which at that time , was under Dutch rule. From the actions carried out by its main member, José Vaz, the Catholic missions were revived by the Oratorians, who found in the Congregation a space of greater activity in the ecclesiastical body in the Portuguese East. Thus, the present article has as main objective to analyze the importance of the Oratorians in the construction of catholic religiosity in the East. The purpose of this proposal is to understand the role of the insertion of the Congregation of the Oratory in the maintenance of Catholicism in Ceylon in the eighteenth century.
