A LOUCURA EM "O CORAÇÃO DENUNCIADOR" DE EDGAR ALLAN POE

Abstract

Throughout the 19th century, the emergence of numerous medical treatises, the opening of psychiatric hospitals, and the impact of Freudian theory made the theme of madness fashionable, attracting numerous writers, including Edgar Allan Poe. In light of Julio Cortázar's essays on the short story, as well as Poe's reflection in "The Philosophy of Composition," this article proposes a reading of "The Tell-Tale Heart," aiming to analyze the harmony between the extreme rigor and economy required in the elaboration of the short story and the closed and solitary world in which the madman of Poe's narrative lives.
