This article explores traditional notions of the I Ching, fengshui and shanshui as a way to highlight the ancient heritage of Chinese cosmology and philosophy as a contribution to the rise and consolidation of contemporary territorial planning strategies and sustainable landscape design in China. Through this discussion, we emphasize the political and environmental role of landscape design amidst the global climate change crisis, and highlight the unique character of Chinese architectural, urban, and landscape production and its ability to articulate contradictions and dualities. Such as the union between innovation and tradition, the coexistence and harmonious dialogue between different spatial scales, and the reconciliation between the built environment and nature. In this sense, we highlight recent patterns and behaviors in the field of Architecture and Urbanism, associated with the concept of Sponge Cities, proposed by Kongjian Yu, based on the implementation of ecological infrastructures that enhance drainage and territorial hydrological balance. Finally, the Chinese trajectory is highlighted as an active search for solutions to global demands for sustainability, quality of life, and development in the Global South, without negating the need for infrastructure, technological innovation, and social inclusion in contemporary urban and regional territories undergoing continuous and complex transformation.
