This paper examines the divergence of modern lyric poetry from classical poetry in its approach to the archetypal theme of the return to one's homeland. While in the epic tradition, in particular, the reunion of heroes with their native land occurs under the sign of good fortune and prosperity, in modern/contemporary poetry the return of subjects to the place of their birth and formation is characterized as a journey of misfortune and disillusionment. The objects of analysis used to demonstrate this hypothesis are two monuments of literary modernity in the Portuguese and French languages, Dirty poem by Ferreira Gullar (2000) and Notebook of a Return to the Native Land by Aimé Césaire (2012). Another hypothesis raised is that in their structural disjunction between the free forms of art and the hierarchical forms of life, the poems by Gullar and Césaire transcend the model of committed literature, and make dissent—or aesthetic resistance—their literary politics. The main theoretical contribution comes from Jacques Rancière (2007; 2009a; 2009b; 2014; 2017).
