The Sistine Chapel through the Eyes of the Della Rovere Family
Brief Reflections on the Commissioning of the Frescoes

The Sistine Chapel, one of the principal legacies of the Della Rovere family in Rome, served as the setting for a singular collaboration among men of learning, ecclesiastics, and painters during the Renaissance. We argue that, rather than merely exalting the faith or reflecting the historical context of its time, the ceiling frescoes gave visual form to the exercise of justice sought by Julius II, which, in turn, enhanced the reputation of both the painter and the patron through this work. To this end, we adopt the methodological approach of iconographic and iconological analysis formulated by the German art historian Erwin Panofsky (1991) for the analysis of the source.
