The CPI of the Última Hora in the press and in the memoirs

This paper aims to problematize the Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry of Última Hora as a moment of crisis in the Republic. The investigation in the National Congress about the financing of Última Hora, a newspaper allied to Getúlio Vargas and headed by Samuel Wainer with money from public banks had major repercussions on the news of 1953 and involved three main topics: power, money and morality. This paper will analyze how these three points mentioned above are articulated to create a tension of forces around the CPI. This paper will use as reference the newspaper Tribuna da Imprensa, a periodical founded by Carlos Lacerda, one of the main enemies of Wainer and Vargas; caricatures drawn by Hilde Weber and a brief analysis of the CPI in the autobiographies of Carlos Lacerda and Samuel Wainer. The methodology will use the procedures of research in periodicals proposed by Tânia Regina de Luca (Luca, 2010) and the image interpretation methodology described in the work of Vinícius Liebel (Liebel, 2017).
