Abstract

This essay interprets Hannah Arendt’s criticism of imperialism in Origins of Totalitarianism. Influenced by the philosophy of Walter Benjamin this historical analysis of imperialism was in Arendt’s described through the breaking points that triggered the depoliticization of nation-states by the superfluity of capital and men, being, again, used by the totalitarian movement. The aim of this work was to reveal the dialogue that Arendt had with Benjamin about the fragmentation of the political tradition and to interpret the readings that both made of Franz Kafka's books and short stories that served for the two intellectuals as a metaphor to understand the intensification of the capitalism in its imperialist phase and the totalitarian rise.
