Abstract

At the height of the Anos de Chumbo (1968-1974), like so many musicians, the pianist Tânia Maria left Brazil. Guided by Rollemberg (1999) and Muller (2014), we analyze the artist’s experience of self-exile, seeking to understand the impact of exile on her career. We examined that several factors made Tania’s musical life in the country unfeasible, and the dictatorship only exacerbated these problems. Faced with the obstruction of creative freedom and the failure of her work in Brazil, the pianist decided to seek her fulfillment in the global jazz scene. In this process of uninstallation – considering her sometimes fractured and fluctuating relationship with Brazilian culture –, Tânia reinvented her identity, proliferating stúdio her work a specific form of musical Brazilianness.
